Свою собаку он доверяет Марии. С легким воспалением миндалин надолго задержаться в больнице ему не удается. Вернувшись домой, он видит, что в его комнате полным ходом идет ремонт; его собака исчезла. Умберто находит ее на улице и спасает от верной смерти. Он пытается просить милостыню, но у него нет способностей к этому занятию. Он протягивает руку, но стоит лишь прохожему достать монету, как Умберто переворачивает ладонь, как будто он лишь проверял, не идет ли дождь. Он отыскивает старых знакомых, но ни у кого нет времени на разговоры. Он подумывает броситься на мостовую с балкона, но его останавливает мысль о собаке. Тогда Умберто пытается доверить ее разным людям. Одним она не нужна; другие не внушают Умберто доверия. Он пытается бросить собаку: она к нему возвращается. Он хочет кинуться под поезд. Собака вырывается из его рук и убегает. Умберто догоняет собаку и принимается играть с ней.► Несмотря на кажущуюся простоту, это самый богатый по смыслу из 4 фильмов, сделанных Де Сикой и Дзаваттини (остальные – Шуша, Sciuscia; Похитители велосипедов, Ladri di biciclette; Чудо в Милане, Miracolo a Milano, 1951). Умберто Д. ― единственный фильм, где сценаристом значится один Дзаваттини. Умберто, главный герой фильма, испытывает на себе сразу несколько роковых несчастий: он беден, стар и одинок. К этому еще стоит добавить несчастье просто-напросто быть человеком. Бедный старый Умберто не в силах изменить реальность, никак не может повлиять на нее, он полностью лишен свободы. Но так ли это? В этом вопросе кроется глубинная суть фильма, и именно он раскрывает нам потайное движение сюжета. Даже в бедственном положении Умберто сохраняет способность наблюдать жизнь. Там, где он забывает о ней, иногда греша безразличием, за него наблюдает Де Сика. Главный талант Де Сики – удивительная способность отождествлять себя с персонажами, как бы ни различались они по возрасту и положению. В этом фильме он ставит себя на место главного героя, чтобы еще внимательнее наблюдать за окружающим его миром, обостренно чувствуя каждый звук, каждый образ, мельчайшие детали этого мира. Как ни странно, наблюдательность приобретает черты невинности; ни судьба, ни тоска не имеют над ней власти. (В этом частично содержится идея неореализма.) Она рождается из пылкого интереса к жизни и в каком-то смысле может эту жизнь изменить.Умберто лишен свободы? Он волен продолжать жить: и этот выбор он сделает. (Попытка самоубийства занимает важное место в фильме.) Он волен по-прежнему любить жизнь – в чем-то или в ком-то, пусть даже в самом неприметном из живых существ. Эта картина, являясь редким примером успешной дедраматизации, тем не менее, как и ее герой, постоянно находится в движении. Действительно ли здесь отсутствует драматургия? Умберто касается самого дна человеческих страданий, но поднимается на поверхность. Возможно, когда-нибудь он снова коснется дна, но бездействие и закоснелость – не в его природе.
